Chapter 5

I’m not sure what I expected out of Theo this evening—another meal at a restaurant I’ll never go to otherwise, maybe, or tickets to a sold-out show. But instead, he brought me out to Coney Island, where I have so many childhood memories. Where I made memories with him years ago, when we decided to go there for the hell of it one steamy summer day. We chased each other in bumper cars, laughing hysterically every time we hit, and a seagull stole his hot dog right out of the bun. It’s one of my favorite memories with him, buried for so long under layers of hurt and sadness. When I take it out now, though, it doesn’t hurt. Not right now, not when we’re together here again.

But between us, things are different. This isn’t some unspoken crush anymore—whatever simmered under the surface for so long is bubbling up, and it was like his brief kiss in the car cracked it wide open. And all evening, I’ve been waiting to figure out what happens next. Who makes a move.

We’re on the boardwalk facing the Atlantic Ocean, drinking cheap beer and lightly chatting. I turn to him and look—really look. The breeze off the ocean blows his light-brown hair out of any discernible style, and that lopsided smile flashes here and there as he talks. I see the real Theo again, but not as I knew him years ago—there’s a grown man standing next to me now, handsome and confident. Confident enough to skip the billionaire flash and show me his private, casual self. I wonder what gossip columnists would say if they could see him here at Coney Island, downing carnival food and trying his hand at all the rigged games. Maybe they wouldn’t even recognize him.

But I do. I would recognize this version of Theo even if I were blind, even if he’s matured over the seven years we were apart. And God, I’ve missed him.

“Let’s do the Wonder Wheel,” he says as he drains the last of his beer and chucks the plastic cup into a nearby trash bin. “It’s been way too long.” He stretches a hand out toward me.

I look at Theo’s outstretched hand and then up at the enormous wheel. The lights glitter and shine in the gathering darkness, like the city that spreads out beneath it. Something flip-flops in my belly, and I wonder if he’s not really talking about the wheel.

“Yeah,” I say, and without hesitating, I reach out and tangle my fingers in his.

We select one of the stationary baskets on the outside of the wheel, and a well-placed twenty in the operator’s hands guarantees that we get it all to ourselves. I slide across the slick benches, over to the side of the basket, watching as we lift higher and higher off the ground as each basket behind us fills with people. Theo presses up next to me, and a shiver slides down my spine as I feel his soft lips against my cheek.
